NLRP3 and COVID-19: It was reported that SARS‐CoV‐2 S protein primes NLRP3 inflammasome activation and IL‐1β secretion in macrophages derived from COVID‐19 patients but not in macrophages from healthy SARS‐CoV‐2 naïve controls and that chemical inhibition of NLRP3 blocks spike protein‐induced IL‐1β secretion ex vivo (Theobald et al., 2020).
