The role of the CXCR4 chemokine receptor and its ligand CXCL12 in atherosclerosis was recently described.7–10 The CXCR4/CXCL12 complex plays an important role in the hematopoiesis in bone marrow,11 apoptosis, and pro-inflammatory progression in atherosclerotic plaques.12 Due to the over-expression of CXCR4 at the immune-cells involved in the inflammatory process, [68Ga]Ga-Pentixafor, a radiotracer with high affinity to CXCR4, has been suggested as a imaging marker of inflammatory cells with PET imaging.13 This evidence concerns the gene CXCL12 and atherosclerosis.
