In terms of influencing treatment, Leteurtre et al. (2004) investigated the tolerance of the colon cancer cell line HT-29 clone to the chemotherapeutic drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and found that HT29-5F12, a mucus-secreting clone mainly expressing MUC2, was composed of nonpolarized cells secreting mucus with anti-colonic mucin immunoreactive activity, suggesting the valuable role of MUC2 in drug resistance pathways. This evidence concerns the gene MUC5AC and malignant colon neoplasm.
