Experiments using Hmox1−/− mice are required to define the putative participation of HO-1 in the protective effects in these models of T. gondii. Finally, these results indicate HO-1 as a host factor capable of increasing both resistance (Fig 4) and disease tolerance to T. gondii infection, a scenario that makes HO-1 induction a candidate therapeutic approach to treat patients with toxoplasmosis. This evidence concerns the gene HMOX1 and toxoplasmosis.
