XYLB and metabolic disease: Amongst the remainder of the proteins encoded by the top 10 differentially expressed genes, the D-Xylulokinase gene (XYLB) encodes for the protein that catalyzes the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of D-xylulose to produce xylulose-5-phosphate (Xu5P) therefore XYLB may play an important role in metabolic disease given that Xu5P is a key regulator of glucose metabolism and lipogenesis (Bunker et al., 2013).
