VASP and dilated cardiomyopathy: Cardiac-specific overexpression of a dominant negative VASP which displaced endogenous VASP and Mena from the cell-cell contacts resulted in mice with disorganised intercalated discs and disrupted adherens junctions, accompanied by dilated cardiomyopathy, supporting a role for VASP in maintaining structural and functional integrity of the cell-cell contacts (Eigenthaler et al. 2003).
