The excess accumulation of Aβ then elicits a pathogenic cascade, including synaptic deficits, altered neuronal activity, inflammation, oxidative stress, neuronal injury, hyperphosphorylation of tau causing neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), and, ultimately, neuronal death and dementia (Choi et al., 2015), thus contributing to overcoming the limitations and drawbacks previously mentioned. Here, MAPT is linked to dementia.
