Within the NLR members, NLRP3 is the most well-known and studied inflammasome and has been linked to many diseases: metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes [9], obesity, gout [10] and atherosclerosis [11,12,13,14]; diseases affecting the central nervous system such as Alzheimer ́s [15,16] and Parkinson ́s [17], cancer [18] and inflammatory diseases [19,20,21]. The gene discussed is NLRP3; the disease is atherosclerosis.
