While the mainstay of management of COVID-19 infection is supportive with the leading cause of mortality resulting from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), multi-organ failure in these patients is possibly associated with a hyperinflammatory syndrome characterized by hypercytokinemia. Increased levels of IL-2, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-10, granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF), interferon (INF)-gamma, and TNF have all been identified [2]. This evidence concerns the gene CXCL8 and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
