SARS-CoV-2 spike protein binds to angiotensin-converting enzyme II (ACE2) receptor to infect cells.9 ACE2 is expressed in the type II alveolar epithelial cells in the lungs, myocardial cells, esophageal, and ileocolic epithelial cells, and may also play a role in the coagulation system.10 The organotypic expression of this receptor may explain the presenting signs and symptoms of patients with COVID-19. This evidence concerns the gene ACE2 and COVID-19.
