In this sense, we have demonstrated that the increased expression of aquaporin-9 (AQP9) (or others aquaglyceroporins) observed in placentas from obese women with GDM could be mediated by hyperleptinemia, suggesting an increase in the transport of glycerol to the fetus and thus contributing to the increased energy intake requirements in the macrosomic fetus in GDM [40]. The gene discussed is AQP9; the disease is gestational diabetes.
