VWF and autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura: One is idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura, in which GAS mimics von Willebrand factor (Factor IX), the main target of autoimmunity in the disease, while cytomegalovirus (CMV) mimics glycoprotein 1b (GP1b), another coagulation factor that binds to (and is therefore molecularly complementary to) von Willebrand factor during clotting.
