As early as 1968 (Ungerstedt, 1968), complete anterograde degeneration of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic neural system associated with motor problems was described in rats after administration of 6-OHDA into the SNpc. In addition to the ability to recapitulate the motor symptoms of the disease (Hisahara and Shimohama, 2010; Tieu, 2011), the 6-OHDA rat model mimics many of the biochemical features of PD, such as a reduction in DA and TH levels in the striatum (Duty and Jenner, 2011). Here, TH is linked to Parkinson disease.
