It is noteworthy that others have previously observed associations between ferritin and aberrant tau filament structures as observed in AD and progressive supranuclear palsy patients, and that disruption to the function of ferritin can be detrimental to the many iron-dependent functions in the brain, in extreme cases (such as neuroferritinopathy) proving fatal84,87–92.
