This approach has seen some success, and studies have demonstrated attenuation of photoreceptor loss in animal models of retina degeneration using exogenous delivery of signaling molecules including pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and several fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) (LaVail et al., 1992; Cayouette and Gravel, 1997; Caffé et al., 2001; Green et al., 2001; Liang et al., 2001; Azadi et al., 2007; Moeller and Neubert, 2013; Kimura et al., 2016; Comitato et al., 2018). This evidence concerns the gene CNTF and retinal degeneration.
