The research for biomarkers related to ALS has been performed principally on Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF), with a large variety of molecules associated with ALS including neurofilament proteins, components of the inflammation process, C9orf72 dipeptide repeat proteins, TAR DNA-Binding protein (43 kDa), cystatin C, specific microRNA (miRNA181a-5p, miRNA-143-5p, miRNA-338-3p) and the mutated Superoxide Dismutase enzyme type 1 (SOD1)7. Here, TARDBP is linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
