Our previous study showed that impairment of microtubule-dependent axonal/dendritic trafficking of mitochondria to distal synapses by abnormal tau hyperphosphorylation caused synapse loss and dysfunction of RGCs in HFD-induced diabetes [6], indicating that defects in mitochondrial transport is an important contributor to diabetic RGCs synaptic neurodegeneration.
