HCC cells import fatty acids and other lipids from the bloodstream; however, HCC cells upregulate enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of fatty acids, including SREBP-1-regulated genes including ATP citrate lyase (ACLY), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), FAS, and SCD-1, leading to the de novo synthesis of fatty acids (68). The gene discussed is FAS; the disease is hepatocellular carcinoma.
