We found that A. baumannii colocalized with EEA1 (early endosomal antigen 1)-containing membranes at early time points post-infection (≤1 h.p.i); interestingly, the compartment was also positive for the autophagosomal marker monodansylcadaverin (MDC) (Biederbick et al., 1995) (Figures 4A–C), suggesting that the internalized bacteria are located in autophagic vacuoles. This evidence concerns the gene EEA1 and infection.
