Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a small population of cancer cells that possess the ability to self-renew, differentiate and modulate cancer growth, recurrence, metastasis and chemoresistance.3,6,37,38 The maintenance of cancer cell stemness largely depends on the surrounding inflammatory microenvironment.39 Our previous work established a medium- throughput siRNA screening platform to identify inflammation genes that regulate cancer cell stemness, and identified several novel candidates (e.g., ICAM3). The gene discussed is ICAM3; the disease is cancer.
