SIRT7 was initially identified as a histone deacetylase capable of removing acetyl groups from acetylated H3K18 and H3K36 in cancer cells and more recently reported as a histone desuccinylase for H3K122 residues across commonly used cell lines (Barber et al., 2012; Li et al., 2016; Wang et al., 2019a).
