IL6 and bipolar disorder: Since the publication of this meta-analysis, a relatively large (n = 99) 2 × 2 factorial design trial of minocycline and aspirin showed no main effect for either treatment, although participants with elevated IL-6 appeared to have a more favourable response to adjunctive minocycline compared with placebo.83 Future studies are needed to assess the efficacy and safety of minocycline in treating bipolar depression; we are aware of at least one large study currently underway to assess the efficacy of both minocycline and celecoxib for bipolar depression.84
