Their main utility is to protect lipoproteins from lipid oxidation and, thereby, and provide defense against the generation of atherosclerosis.8-10 It was, accordingly, reported in the previous studies that the serum level of PON-1 was closely related to endovascular functioning and, hence, the extent of coronary arterial disease (CAD).11, 12 Although PON-1 displays a wide range of genetic polymorphism, which in turn culminates into the functional diversity of the enzyme, the same does not hold true for ARE.
