It is well documented that radiation enhances the curative effect of ICIs by modulating the cancer immune microenvironment.10 For example, radiation induces DNA damage in cancer cells and facilitates dsDNA (double-strand DNA) release, thus activating the cGAS/STING signaling pathway; as a consequence, innate immunity is stimulated and lymphocyte infiltration is increased in cancer tissues.11 Meanwhile, by destroying cancer cells and promoting the antigen presentation, radiation activates immunity to induce lymphocyte infiltration and improve the efficacy of immunotherapy.12–14. The gene discussed is STING1; the disease is cancer.
