CCL2 and type 2 diabetes mellitus: Inhibition of MCP‐1 using NOX‐E36 (ematicap pegol) for the treatment of T2DM and albuminuria has successfully completed phase IIa clinical trials and showed reduction in HbA1c levels in albuminuric T2DM patients.78 The drug is a Spiegelmer® (l‐isomers of RNA oligonucleotides)‐based therapeutic agent that interacts specifically with MCP‐1 and inhibits its activity.79 Very recently, the drug showed preclinical success in the treatment of liver cancer.80 Bindarit is a small‐molecule inhibitor of MCP‐1 that has completed phase II clinical trials for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy.
