In the majority of severe COVID-19 patients, the cytokine storm was associated with high levels of erythematosus sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP), which were associated with ARDS, hypercoagulation, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), presenting as thrombocytopenia, thrombosis, and gangrene of the limbs. Here, CRP is linked to acute respiratory distress syndrome.
