On the one hand, ACE2 can act as a tissue-protective component during severe acute lung injury induced by other respiratory viruses, such as influenza and HCoV-OC43.3 Therefore, induction of ACE2 expression would not be a trait exclusive to SARS-CoV-2 and it is still elusive whether increasing expression of ACE2 is more protective or harmful in vivo.
