In a non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) model induced by a methionine- and choline-deficient or high-fat diet, lipotoxicity can cause mitochondrial damage and up-regulate STING/IRF3 expression in hepatocytes, which in turn promotes lipid accumulation and inhibits glycogen synthesis. The gene discussed is IRF3; the disease is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis.
