The underlying pathophysiology of COVID-19 involves a maladaptive immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection with increased levels of IL-6, IL-10, IL-2 and TNFα produced by macrophages, and fewer CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, but no significant changes in B-cell counts [1, 9, 43]. The gene discussed is IL6; the disease is COVID-19.
