Furthermore, Gal3 and another galectin, Gal4 [14], are found in morphological distinct short tubular endocytic carriers, termed clathrin-independent carriers (CLICs), that have previously been described for the cellular uptake of cholera toxin, glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins, and the cancer stem cell marker CD44 [43, 44], again arguing for strong similarities.
