The expression of UCP1 and CIDEA in WAT is also used as browning markers, since the emergence of beige adipocytes in WAT, adipocytes containing several small fat droplets but also a great mitochondrial density [71], represents an adaptation process to increase thermogenic demand, reducing adverse effects of WAT and improving metabolic health [70, 75] so browning induction has even been developed as treatment for obesity-related metabolic diseases. This evidence concerns the gene UCP1 and obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
