One of them, spinocerebellar ataxia-25 (SCAR25), is caused by a mutation in the autophagy-related 5 gene (ATG5), encoding a protein that is part of the ATG12-ATG5-ATG16L1 complex, which facilitates LC3/GABARAP conjugation (Mizushima, 2020). Here, ATG5 is linked to spinocerebellar ataxia type 25.
