NO reacts with superoxide and forms highly toxic peroxynitrite (ONOO-).13 It has been proven that peroxynitrite upregulates angiogenic factors such as VEGF, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and HIF-1alpha in human corneal limbal epithelial and human umbilical vein endothelial cell culture.14 It is clear that NO at the site of inflammation must be balanced by physiologic mechanisms, and this also explains the importance of having sufficient Hb in RBCs to prevent ROP. This evidence concerns the gene VEGFA and retinopathy of prematurity.
