Interleukin (IL)-6, a pleiotrophic cytokine, and the chitinase-like glycoprotein YKL-40 are found in glioblastoma tumor cells and cells in the brain tumor microenvironment (7–12), influence tumor propagating mechanisms mentioned above (11–17) and inhibition of YKL-40 or IL-6 decrease tumor growth in xenografted glioma mouse models (15, 17). This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and central nervous system cancer.
