The first study to highlight the potential effects of statins on infection by M. TB was conducted 20 years ago by Montero et al., where it was observed that fluvastatin modulates the release of type 1 T helper (Th1) and type 2 T helper (Th2) cytokines and consequently activates caspase-1 or leads to the secretion of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-18 and interferon gamma (IFNγ) [38]. The gene discussed is IFNG; the disease is infection.
