ATP8B1 and infection: Upon infection, PLE excises from the bacterial chromosome, harnessing an ICP1-encoded protein as the trigger (McKitterick and Seed, 2018), replicates using both PLE and ICP1-encoded products (Barth et al., 2020; McKitterick et al., 2019a), and accelerates cell lysis after forming particles hypothesized to be made by hijacking ICP1 structural components to transduce the PLE genome to naïve recipient cells (O'Hara et al., 2017).
