Accumulating studies have demonstrated that macrophage serves as an important route for local immune responses in periodontitis because macrophage can produce multiple proinflammatory mediators, including tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and IL-1β and IL-6 through activating the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B (NF-κB) pathway [29].
