Prior to 3D printing the semi-porous capsule, we conducted diffusion experiments and observed that the photocurable PEGDM membrane was capable of limiting diffusion of large molecules (150 kDa) to protect the cells from the body’s immune factor molecules, while simultaneously allowing passage of smaller molecules (40 kDa) like oxygen and nutrients that are essential for cell survivability, and BDNF molecules that are needed for the treatment of retinal diseases. This evidence concerns the gene BDNF and Abnormal retinal morphology.
