ATG5 and cancer: Not surprisingly, increasing research has demonstrated that drug resistance in cancer therapy can be abrogated by the inhibition of autophagy via genomic interference against autophagic genes (siRNA targeting Atg3, Atg5, Atg7, and Beclin 1) or pharmacological inhibitors of key components within the autophagy pathway in cancer resistance (Kumar et al., 2015) (Table 1).
