ANO1 and cancer: TMEM16A has been found to be overexpressed in many cancer types,14,17 and its overexpression is associated with a poorer prognosis.18,19 TMEM16A has high potential as a target for various types of cancer20 and many TMEM16A small-molecule inhibitors have been found to suppress cell migration and proliferation in cancer cell lines.21–23 In addition, a micro-RNA targeting TMEM16A has recently been shown to act as a tumor suppressor in gastric cancer cells,24 presenting a new therapeutic modality with respect to inhibiting TMEM16A.
