Chemokines, a group of cytokines that attract and activate leucocytes into inflamed tissue, have been associated with the pathogenesis of a number of diseases, ranging from atherosclerosis to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection [54], and CCL21 has been suggested as being involved in the pathogenesis of various inflammatory disorders including rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, and atherosclerosis [55].
