For both AMD and RP, currently available therapies normally only aim to slow down the death of photoreceptors, by providing nutritional supplements (Krishnadev et al., 2010) or through anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections (Ba et al., 2015) and lasers (Virgili et al., 2015), with limited available treatments for stopping the progression of the diseases or restoring vision. The gene discussed is VEGFA; the disease is age-related macular degeneration.
