ALOX5 and neoplasm: Numerous evidences suggest the involvement of the 5-LOX pathway in the proliferation and survival of tumor cells [37,38,39,40,41,42,43,44]: (I) the enzymes necessary for the biosynthesis of LTs, as well as the LTs receptors, are present or even over-expressed in transformed cells or neoplastic tissues; (II) a substantial formation of 5-LOX products occurs at these sites; (III) the addition of 5-LOX products from the outside stimulates the proliferation and survival of tumor cells; (IV) pharmacological or genetic 5-LOX inhibition inhibits tumor cell growth and induces apoptosis.
