Using CAV1(+) EC, CAV1(−) PC3 together with CAV1(+) HS5 fibroblasts as a model combination for the CAV1 status of the respective cells found in healthy or low-grade prostate carcinoma, and CAV1(+) EC, CAV1(+) PC3 together with CAV1(−) fibroblasts as a model combination for advanced tumor stages, it becomes clear that the very-long-chain ceramides are expressed in higher amounts in each respective more radio-resistant CAV1 variant. The gene discussed is CAV1; the disease is prostate carcinoma.
