It has recently been demonstrated that macrophages play a role in the control of BAT innervation; as selective depletion of the nuclear transcription factor Mecp2 (methyl-CpG- binding protein 2) in macrophages, a murine model of Rett syndrome, leads to spontaneous obesity with compromised homeostatic energy expenditure and thermogenesis of BAT. The gene discussed is MECP2; the disease is obesity disorder.
