Tang's group demonstrated that knockout or knockdown of autophagy-related 5 (Atg5) and autophagy-related 7 (Atg7) degraded ferritin in fibroblasts and cancer cells, resulting in the limitation of erastin-induced ferroptosis by decreasing intracellular ferrous iron levels and lipid peroxidation (Hou et al., 2016). The gene discussed is ATG5; the disease is cancer.
