PANX1 and neoplasm: Some features that help the tumor cells to protect themselves against the different stressors in the bloodstream are cell autonomous (e.g. the overexpression of a truncated version of pannexin-1, a transmembrane channel protein, in combination with its wild-type counterpart, increases ATP release from the channel upon mechanical stress, which, in turn, leads to an autocrine loop inhibiting tumor cell apoptosis, as shown for breast cancer metastasis models [84]).
