IFIH1 (interferon induced helicase C domain 1), which is located on human chromosome 2q24.2, was identified by GWAS as a candidate gene conferring risk to T1DM; it is expressed in human pancreatic beta-cells and encodes MDA (melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5), a cytoplasmic sensor that recognizes dsRNA, a byproduct of viral replication (51, 52). The gene discussed is IFIH1; the disease is type 1 diabetes mellitus.
