A prior seminal observation of different patterns of tau aggregates cloned in HEK cells from patients with distinct tauopathies has been made by Diamond and co-workers [95], with more recent studies suggesting that different tau strains can be generated from monomers without seeds [64, 98]; the latter data have been interpreted as evidence that alternatively structured monomers can encipher the information essential for formation of tau strains. Here, MAPT is linked to tauopathy.
