A phase 2a clinical study with a low-dose combination of a catalytic (BEZ235) plus an allosteric (RAD001) mTOR inhibitor that selectively inhibits mTOR downstream target of rapamycin complex 1 (TORC1) for 6 weeks demonstrates that mTOR inhibitor therapy is safe, enhances immune function, decreases the incidence of upper respiratory infections and improves the response to influenza vaccination in seniors [101].
